Dear Dr Clarke,
As you are aware, our mother was rushed into hospital in January 2013 at the age of 88 following collapse after suffering congestive heart failure. She had a history of Atrial Fibrillation and Diabetes.
She came under your care and after monitoring her on the ward for some time, you decided that she was a suitable candidate for a new type of Pacemaker new type of pacemaker which paces both sides of the heart, not just the right side, called a biventricular pacemaker or CRT-p device.
Prior to this, mother's health had been gradually declining and she had become increasingly lethargic, breathless and unable to walk far which was totally out of character for her. Most weeks entailed trips to the GP trying to sort out her many health issues.
Post operatively however it is as if she has been given a new lease of life. She has renewed energy and a quality of life again that was not there beforehand. Her trips to the GP have decreased considerably and she has been able to look forward to each day again. Everyday activities such as a trip to the supermarket, walking the dog etc have been made possible.
The positive in her being chosen as a recipient of this implant has undoubtedly meant that she has been able to avoid hospital treatment for the last four years, which in turn must have saved the NHS valuable time and money.
Taking into account her age, heart condition and diabetes this is truly commendable and words cannot express how grateful we are that she has been given this second chance of life.
We honestly believe Dr Clarke that you are a shining light in this field of expertise and because of your unwavering support and attention we have our mother back. We cannot thank you enough.
Yours sincerely
Hazel Harris and Susan Bosanko (daughters).
